"To prevent and resolve disputes between neighbours, within families and communities by providing advice, guidance and mediation services to people and organisations in West Sussex."
West Sussex Mediation Service provides a free community mediation service (specialising in neighbour disputes) throughout the county of West Sussex, using trained and independent volunteer mediators who visit people in their local area.
Mediation is a way that people can bring about their own solutions around issues which cause conflict or dispute, with the aid of trained volunteer mediators. The mediators act as the impartial third party in the discussions between parties seeking a resolution. Mediators do not suggest the solutions, but offer a process whereby people can communicate and find their way forward. This usually has long lasting benefits for individuals and communities and allows a non-confrontational means of overcoming difficulties. This forms part of an early intervention service working in co-operation with statutory services and housing associations, but acting independently and impartially. Many people cannot afford, nor wish, to take legal action (nor move home), and our mediation service provides assistance when no other option is available or accessible.
